What is the difference between an HSA and an FSA...everyone is confused about that. An FSA has been around a lot longer. That stands for Flexible Spending Account. That's the "use it or lose it" account that you probably had when you worked at a bank or manufacturing company. Alot of company's offer a flexible spending account. What happens is that you say ok, no matter what kind of plan you have, whether it's an HMO or PPO, I'm going to be out of pocket a certain number of dollars each year to cover my co-pays, deductibles, prescriptions, maybe braces, or lasik surgery. So at the beginning of the year, you say you want to set aside a certain amount of money ,maybe a thousand or two thousand dollars and then you have to spend it all throughout the year and if you don't, you lose it. So that's the old fashioned Flexible Spending Account. There's also an account for dependent care. So that if you have children in daycare or even parents in daycare so you can work, you'll be able to take that out of your check, pre-tax, which helps alot. A Health Savings Account is completely different. It has to be paired with an HSA compatible high deductible health plan. And there are IRS guidelines on what and how high the deductible has to be and also the fact that nothing can be covered under the health plan until you reach the deductible, with the exception of preventative care. Preventative care is usually covered with no cost to you. But then everything else even an office visit or prescription you have to meet that high deductible. And so the Health Savings Account is an individual savings account that you establish to cover your deductible costs. You can put in money and it's completely tax deductible from your federal taxes, not California state but federal and if you don't use it all, it rolls over year to year. It's kind of like an IRA, only it's super charged because it goes in tax free, it comes out tax free, and the interest is tax free as long as you use it for qualified health expenses.
